19 days in the wild
In the current issue of Wild magazine (Issue 194) is the story of our adventure across Oxley Wild Rivers National Park in NSW - 19 days, 150 kilometres, 52 river crossings, 7 topo maps, 2 hidden food caches and one amazing national park - a truly memorable journey filled with moments of wonder, hard work and wild rivers. But, all magazine stories have a word limit and choosing which anecdotes to include, and which to leave out, is always challenging. So, now (here) is the chance to share a few extracts that didn’t make the cut.
The salt lake sleep out…
This sleep-out, on a salt lake somewhere, is a lesson in how to have an adventure in just one night - how to break the boredom of a road trip, how to learn about the earth by living in it, exploring across it, sleeping on it.
An icon in the making
Many locals argue that Mount Tyndall, and its labyrinth of lakes and cliffs, is Tasmania’s finest alpine region. However, it is soon to become the subject a new ‘iconic walk’. This story explores both its natural beauty and the development it now faces.
The Long Tarns
This story was written to accompany a new online exhibition of photos, themed along our encounters with ice. Many of the pictures were taken at Long Tarns where this story is centred, although the story explores more personal encounters with the landscape and its Palawa past.
Celebrating waterfalls
Waterfalls are a central part of our adventuring - sometimes they are our destination; sometimes we come across them unexpectedly. This story explores the beauty, wonder and diversity of waterfalls in Australia; bringing to life one of nature’s most loved and sought after features.
Where it all began
It all began with the blog page awildland.blogspot.com.au which boasts stories detailing adventures from every state and territory in Australia. Hiking, sea kayaking, pack rafting, whitewater rafting, bike touring and exploration of wild places. Find out more here.
Redbank Gorge
A few months ago we paddled into a mountain - one of our shortest and most accessible adventures yet. But also, one of our most extraordinary. Redbank Gorge in the amazing Tjoritja National Park in the Northern Territory.
